ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
Root Canal Treatment is also commonly known as Endodontic Treatment. It is a procedure done when the tooth decay reaches the pulp (innermost layer of the tooth) and causes inflammation. It is important to save the damaged tooth from extraction. This treatment is performed by an Endodontist who is also known as a Root Canal Specialist. The treatment involves:
- Removal of infected tooth material
- Cleansing and disinfection
- Filling and sealing with an inert material
- Restoration and crown/cap
PROCEDURE FOR ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
It involves an X-ray taken to ascertain the extent and approach to infection. If required, local anesthesia is given before starting the treatment.
It involves cavity preparation. A cavity is prepared to make sure all the infected tooth material is removed, and a proper way to inner-part of the tooth is established.
This is supported by disinfection and shaping of the pulp canals. The infected pulp is cleared completely, canals are shaped and cleaned. Thorough disinfection is achieved in this step.
The clean and disinfected canals are sealed and filled with Gutta-Percha which is a dormant rubber-like filling material.
The last step is restoration and crown. The crown portion of the tooth cavity is restored with a filling and followed by a Cap/Crown cementation.
