  • 91 Beyond the conjugal alliance, marriage creates alliances between a variety of family-members.
  • People’s ways of knowing are a product of a consensual validation process within the various social systems they engage in such as their family, community, and country.
  • At the same time, some couples — particularly those in intercultural and cross-cultural relationships — get involved in online couples therapy or relationship coaching because they have further to go in bridging the gap.

Therapists who practice cultural sensitivity may deviate from standard therapeutic methods; however, they must also adhere to their profession’s ethical guidelines, for example, when it comes to the disclosure of personal information. Genetic services for ethnic minority populations can be community based, but must link into the Regional Genetic Services.

Marrying outside the family or to more distant relatives may become an increasingly acceptable means of avoiding genetic disorders in high-risk situations for some families. Language and cultural barriers to genetic counselling are reduced by having appropriately trained genetic counsellors from the same cultural background as the family.

This encourages homogamy and arranged marriages within the ethnic group. In other cases, a girl from Japan would arrive in the United States as a picture bride, pre-arranged to marry the Japanese American man on arrival, whom she had never met. Non-consanguineous arranged marriage is one where the bride and groom do not share a grandparent or near ancestor. This type of arranged marriages is common in Hindu and Buddhist South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia and Christian Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa.

The process of such engagement also includes identifying community resilience and ways to build on values that are important to the community. Communication about individual risk is important, but prevention and control messaging is more likely to be achieved when we engage the voices of those who live in the communities, particularly communities that bear the heaviest burden of the pandemic.

Similarly, some traditional events may evoke controversy as to their meaning and whether they should celebrated at all (e.g., Columbus Day). Regardless of what side of the debate you might align with, the first and most important step is to understand the issue. This desire to analyze people in reductionist ways in order to identify internal basic, essential characteristics stripped of their social context is reflective of a Western idealistic view of people as self-reliant, behaving independent of their social milieu. Therapy sometimes is not simply about you – it can be about those who love you and who are impacted by your behavior, in which case it becomes the most compassionate thing you can engage in. So, can one person-in-therapy change things for their relationship or family?

Arya, 27-years old, Indian-American, and Patrick, 30 years, Caucasian, have been dating for the last year. They met each other on the dating app, Bumble, and shortly after started dating. In order to survive the controlling and strict family environment, Arya found herself lying or “manipulating the truth.” When Patrick was very young, his father in pursuit of an affair, deserted their family. Following the divorce, Patrick’s mother raised him and his siblings with the support of her extended family. Recently, jealousy and trust issues seemed to have been sparked between Arya and Patrick over “flirtatious messages,” Arya perceives that Patrick exchanged with an ex on Instagram, Facebook, and Facebook Messenger. We all get mad at our loved ones – however, when anger is protracted or passive, important issues are neglected and a downward spiral can begin in relationships creating a relationship rife with defensiveness, blame, stonewalling, and criticism where important issues are repressed. When important needs are postponed, and underlying differences are not validated, appreciated, or respected they can start to erode the vitality of relationships.

184 Many people do not value, experience, nor desire full independence from parental authority. 169 In addition, social control, typical for group cultures, is applied to guard behaviour. ‘Deeply embedded in social functions, an inalienable part of the inner order of family … ritualized at every turn, authority is so closely woven into the fabric of tradition and morality … ’.

This theory is supported by the observed rapid drop in arranged marriages in fast growing economies of Asia. The financial benefit parents receive from their working single daughters has been cited as a reason for their growing reluctance to see their daughters marry at too early an age. A woman who refuses to go through with an arranged marriage, tries to leave an arranged marriage via divorce or is suspected of any kind of “immoral” behaviour, may be considered to have dishonored her entire family.
