What is Prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics as their name implies “prosthesis means additional or attachment”,”odont means tooth”, is also known as dental prosthetics or prosthetic dentistry. It mainly focuses or concentrates on dental prostheses. Prosthodontics is the dental specialty that treats patients with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues (or) primarily concerned with the restoration and replacement of lost or damaged teeth.

The CDA defines Prosthodontics as “that branch and specialty of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis, restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance and health of the patient by the restoration of the natural teeth and/or the replacement of missing teeth and contiguous oral and maxillofacial tissues with artificial substitutes”.

What are the procedures included in prosthodontics?

The prosthodontic procedures include: – Dental Implants, Dentures, Veneers, Crowns, Teeth Whitening, Bridges, Onlays, and Inlays.

Dental Implants:-

Implants consist of a titanium metal post which is implanted in the jaw in a minor surgical procedure. Implants can be used to replace single or multiple teeth, or to support other types of dental restorations, such as bridges or dentures. Implants are initially the most costly tooth replacement method, but may prove an excellent value in the long run, as they can last a lifetime.

Dentures:-

Dentures are available in many different types, including full, partial, and implant-supported varieties. They can improve the aesthetics and functionality of an individual who is missing teeth particularly when the dentures are manufactured to a high standard and fitted correctly in the mouth, wearing dentures typically requires an adjustment period, and some find them uncomfortable in certain situations.

Veneers:-

Veneers wafer-thin shells of ceramic material that cover the front surfaces of teeth, providing a dramatic change in appearance. Long-lasting veneers can change the size, shape or colour of teeth, and even close small gaps between teeth.

Crowns:-

Crowns are artificial covers (sometimes called “caps”) that replace the entire visible surface of a tooth above the gum line.  They are often needed after a root canal procedure, or to repair fractured, broken or misshapen teeth.

Teeth Whitening:-

Tooth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surfaces. It cannot make a complete colour change, but it may lighten the existing shade.

Bridges:-

Bridges this tooth-replacement method uses the existing, healthy teeth (called abutment teeth) on either side of a gap to support one or more artificial teeth. These work like a roadway-bridge foundation to hold up the crowns for the missing teeth in between. Bridges are a time-tested tooth-replacement method, but require special attention to cleaning, and potentially compromise the structure of the otherwise healthy abutment teeth.

Inlay:-

An Inlay is defined as a restoration which has been constructed out of the mouth of gold, porcelain or other metal and then cemented into the prepared cavity of tooth.

Onlay:-

The Onlay is essentially an inlay that covers one or more cusp and adjoining occlusal surface of the tooth.

Why do I need a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontists are recognized as the diagnosis and treatment planning experts. Identification of the cause of oral deterioration is a key element to any dental treatment in order to stop the progression of disease, minimize its impact, develop an effective treatment strategy and prevent future recurrence of disease. Prosthodontists develop the overall treatment plans and synchronize treatment sequences with other specialists as well as with general dentists in order to provide the most comprehensive care.
